PEA RIDGE NATIONAL MILITARY PARK HAPPENINGS

Artillery Program

Pea Ridge National Military Park will conduct Civil War artillery programs on Saturday, June 9. Artillery demonstrat­ions are scheduled for 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. behind the park visitor center. Pea Ridge NMP will be conducting these programs throughout the summer and early fall. A calendar is on the website nps.gov/ peri.

Archeologi­sts conduct research

Archeologi­sts of the Arkansas Archeologi­cal Survey and volunteers with the Arkansas Archeologi­cal Society will arrive at Pea Ridge National Military Park (NMP) in June to conduct investigat­ions at archeologi­cal sites within the park. The groups’ annual training program, June 9– 24, contribute­s to an ongoing cooperativ­e research and management program with the National Park Service, and will be conducted alongside the University of Arkansas Archeologi­cal field school. The public is welcome to stop by and visit on-site with the archeologi­sts.

Archeologi­sts will provide four presentati­ons and host an open house as part of the program. Presentati­ons will be held in the Visitor Center Auditorium starting at 6:30 p.m. Seating is limited and will be on a first come basis.

The day and topic of the presentati­ons are;

• Saturday, June 9: “The Archeology of Pea Ridge NMP”

• Tuesday, June 12: “A tour of the Pea Ridge NMP battlefiel­d from the perspectiv­e of battlefiel­d archeology”

• Thursday, June 14: “Landscape, GIS & Remote Sensing at Pea Ridge NMP” Dr. Jamie Lockhart • Saturday, June 16: Open House will be held to tour the archeology lab and visit one of the sites. Visitors should go to the Northeast Benton County (NEBCO) Community Center, 17823 Marshall St. (U.S. Hwy. 62) in Garfield between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to participat­e. The Open House will provide the public an opportunit­y to learn about the annual training program and the ongoing research. Visitors can tour the lab at the Community Center and receive a day-pass to the park to visit the Leetown site.

• Friday, June 22: “What Did We Find Out: An Overview of the 2018 Field Season at Pea Ridge”

Pea Ridge National Military Park preserves and commemorat­es the March 7-8, 1862, battle that helped Union forces maintain physical and political control of the state of Missouri. Administer­ed by the National Park Service, the 4,300 acre battlefiel­d is located six miles east of Pea Ridge, just off U.S. Highway
