50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 5 No. 10 Thursday, March 5, 1970

On March 5, 1862, Brig. Gen. Samuel R. Curtis sent the following dispatch to Brig. Gen. Franz Sigel, his second in command: “One of my spies fell in with some rebels who stole our wagons 10 miles out on the Fayettevil­le road. The spy pretended to be secesh and they told him that Price was moving on us… This may be only a feint, but we had better unite our forces at Sugar Creek and be ready for any occasion. Our stand must be at Sugar Creek where I hope to join you tomorrow.”

Acting on a motion by alderman Lee Otis Hall, the Pea Ridge City Council voted to establish a committee to raise money to purchase a new fire truck for the local fire department. It was voted to ask each household to donate $25 toward the fund.

40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Vol. 15 No. 10 Wednesday, March 5, 1980

Facing a financial crisis, due to decreased income, the Pea Ridge City Council, in a called meeting Thursday evening, voted to borrow $3,500 to help carry the city through the low income period.

Avoca Mayor Gary Blackburn said he had lived in Avoca 20 months and “enjoyed it more than anywhere else I’ve lived. I believe is a growing community. It will catch up with and pass Pea Ridge.” He has been appointed postmaster at Garfield and may be moving soon.

Loyd Pifer announced he has hired a patrolman succeeding Bill Peters who resigned. He said Dennis Schell will begin work Tuesday.

Dale “Cowboy” Tabor convinced some students at Pea Ridge High School last week that they are better off than they might of thought. Tabor, a cousin of PRHS teacher Jim Cheek, is a quadripleg­ic. The 41-year-old Pyatt High School graduate, who won a basketball scholarshi­p to college, was injured in an automobile accident 21 years ago. He is an accomplish­ed artist.

The City of Pea Ridge has been dismissed from a condemnati­on lawsuit filed last year by three Pea Ridge residents who contended that they suffered damage to their land from the paving of Arkansas Highway 265.

The general chairman of the 1990 Pea Ridge Lions Club Mule Jump said that the event will be bigger and better. Dale Wagner said he expects double the crowd and a third again as many mules as the previous year.

Basketball coach Larry Walker was pleased with the showing of his teams this year, despite the lack of experience the teams enjoyed last year. He said all four teams — boys and girls junior and varsity — played for the district finals this year.

In March of 1862, the forces of the Union and Confederat­es armies clashed in an area near today’s community of Pea Ridge in one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. Pea Ridge had already establishe­d its post office in 1850.

If fingerprin­t analysis currently comes back negative, a South Carolina man being held for the murder of a Pea Ridge couple may not go to trial. Fingerprin­t analysis on money Etheridge Kneece allegedly paid his niece, Rose Cushman, to kill his wife is being conducted by the FBI lab in Quantico, Va.

Constructi­on is progressin­g quickly on Pea Ridge’s new high school Superinten­dent Roy Norvall said all roofing is finished with the exception of the new gym.

Pea Ridge’s Haley Bone, 11, and Chase Thetford, 7, were winners at the St. Mary’s Run for for the Gold Mile Run held Saturday in Rogers. Bone was the overall winner among boys and girls in the 14 and under division with a time under 7 minutes. She was so far ahead of the field in the race (over 90 seconds), finish line officials failed to realize she was finished and didn’t record her time.

Constructi­on of a new church building is expected to begin with groundbrea­king Sunday, March 14, following the approval of the Messiah Lutheran Church large scale developmen­t plan by Pea Ridge Planning Commission members March 2.

Excessive snow days this school year prompted a change in the calendar for the 2010-2011 year, allotting two spring break days as make-up days if needed in an effort to end the school year before June.

Pea Ridge’s 4A-1 district has a team in the final of both the girls and boys’ state basketball championsh­ips games to be played this weekend in Hot Springs.
