50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 5 No. 53 Thursday, Dec. 31, 1970
Pea Ridge School District voters will be asked to approve a five-mill increase in taxes at the March 9 school election in a continuing effort to raise the Pea Ridge school ratings to the mandatory “A” rate and save the schools from elimination. At the present time, Pea Ridge School District is one of three in the county with the lowest school tax millage. Pea Ridge, Gentry and Gravette each have 52 mills.
The annual filing time for candidates for the Pea Ridge School Board begins next week. In order to file, a person must obtain signatures of at least 20 qualified voters in the district. In Pea Ridge, the position now held by Richard Beaver comes up for reelection in March.
Pea Ridge Cub Scouts Danny Ricketts, Jimmy Henson and Gregory Schumacher posed for a photograph with a United States flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol. The flag was presented to Pack 113 by Congressman John Paul Hammerschmidt.

Meat and other food products totaling over $600 were taken from Wanda’s Restaurant on Highway 62 just east of the Pea Ridge National Military Park Dec. 16. Owner and operator Wanda Mahurin said entry was gained through a back window.
On Dec. 21, during the afternoon after church, burglars broke into the residence of Ross Nichols, Avoca, and stole the morning’s offering of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Nichols, treasurer for the church, said he left the offering, estimated at $200, on a table.
Outstanding in a review of sports in Pea Ridge County in the past year is the championship won by the Blackhawk basketball team in the district tournament and the designation of Coach Jim Roe as coach of the year for the 1-A-West conference for his second straight year for the honor.
