50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 6 No. 2 Thursday, Jan. 12, 1971

According to figures that have been released this past week from the U.S. Census Bureau, Pea Ridge was the fastest growing town in Benton County during the past decade. From a population of 380 in 1960, Pea Ridge went to 1,088, an increase of 186.3%. Benton County was one of the fastest growing counties in the state.

Miss Penny Hall was crowned senior high basketball homecoming queen. The current Miss Pea Ridge, Miss Hall is a senior. Members of her court are Billye McElmurry, sophomore; Yvonne Snow, sophomore; Elaine Popken, senior; Peggy Arnold, junior; and Peggy McKinney, junior.

40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Vol. 16 No. 2 Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1981

Considerat­ion of installati­on of fuel tanks for city vehicles, a change in compensati­on for the city attorney and considerat­ion of easements for the city’s sewer project were the major items of business transacted by the Pea Ridge City Council Thursday.

Pea Ridge’s Dari-Park restaurant, formerly the American Drive-In and the Orange Blossom, has been purchased by Bert Arnold, Bella Vista, from Mrs. Ruth Gunn, Bentonvill­e. It will continue to be managed by Debbie Phillips and Diane Small.

The Pea Ridge Library awning collapsed under the weight of ice from recent sleet. The front window was also broken.

The Pea Ridge City Council has a new face. Norman Abrams was appointed to the City Council last month by Mayor Mary Rogers. David Scism was sworn in as constable.

City road crews have been busier than usual this time of year and busier than they’ve ever been in his seven years with the city, says David Guyll, Pea Ridge Street superinten­dent.

Thomas Wayne O’Dell of Avoca was the only mayor who attended the New Year’s Day swearing in ceremony at the Benton County Courthouse.

The Pea Ridge School Board plans to consider a $30,000 track facility at its next meeting.

Demurely giving credit to others, M.J. Hensley accepted a plaque and applause from Mayor Jackie Crabtree and city officials for his years of service to the city as an engineer.

Pea Ridge school employees, both certified and classified, will receive additional bonuses and stipends, thanks to federal money and local funds, after School Board members approved the recommenda­tion by school superinten­dent Mike Van Dyke.

Upon returning from an out-of-town holiday trip on New Year’s Day, Hector Garcia found a door ajar on his house and many items missing. Police said the missing items had been recovered previously during a traffic stop.
