Rumble strips installed nightly at Fort Pitt Tunnel

-

Seeking to improve safety during construction in the inbound Fort Pitt Tunnel, a PennDOT contractor will install two sets of temporary rumble strips at the approach to the tunnel nightly.

Traffic in the tunnel is restricted to one lane starting at 10 on weeknights. The rumble strips will be installed just east of the Banksville Road on-ramp and at the mouth of the tunnel, causing nightly traffic stoppages of up to 10 minutes about 10 p.m. and again at 6 a.m., when the strips are removed.

The lane closures are scheduled to continue through the end of the year as a $14.2 million project continues to remove the tunnel ceiling and make other improvements.

PennDOT urged motorists to observe the 40-mph work zone speed limit.
