DE Hardy suspended
The NFL suspended defensive end Greg Hardy for 10 games without pay Wednesday for conduct detrimental to the league after concluding there was “credible evidence” he roughed up his exgirlfriend nearly a year ago when he was with the Carolina Panthers.
Hardy, who joined the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent on a one-year, incentive-laden deal, was notified Wednesday of the decision in a letter from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Hardy plans to appeal.
His suspension will begin Sept. 5. He is eligible to return Thanksgiving day against Carolina.

Norwin’s Alayna Gribble, one of the top junior girls basketball players in Western Pennsylvania, backed out of her verbal commitment to William & Mary and decided to play for Pitt. Gribble, a 6-foot guard-forward, visited Pitt Tuesday and Panthers coach Suzie McConnell Serio offered her a scholarship. Gribble accepted Wednesday.
“Pitt’s a bigger level [than William & Mary] and playing for Suzie meant a lot,” Gribble said.
Gribble averaged 20 points a game for Norwin this past season and led the Knights to the WPIAL Class AAAA championship. She will sign with Pitt in November.
• Sherri McConnell resigned as girls basketball coach at North Allegheny. McConnell was the Tigers coach for eight seasons and had a record of 147-48.

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said Jameis Winston’s comments that the ex-Seminoles quarterback believed he had an understanding with an unidentified grocery store employee that led to the much-publicized crab legs shoplifting incident are likely true. Asked about Winston’s comments at an ACC coaches teleconference, Fisher said: “If he says it is, I guess it is.” He added it appears to be “totally an isolated incident.”
