‘Whale’ tale

“The Whale” is a bold un-PC title for a play about Charlie, an Idaho recluse who at 600 pounds is eating himself to death yet still yearning to reconnect with his estranged daughter. The Samuel D. Hunter play makes its Pittsburgh debut, starring F.J. Hartland and directed by Linda Haston, starting Friday at Off the Wall Theater in Carnegie.

Showtimes through May 9 are 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at Off the Wall, 25 W. Main St., Carnegie. Tickets are $5-$35 at www.insideoffthewall.com 1-888-71-TICKETS. The play is recommended for 16 and older. Note that the Carnegie exit ramps off I-376 are closed in both directions; detour: I-376 to I-79 South and take the Carnegie exit toward Carnegie.

PSO + Texas Tenors

The Texas Tenors, who made their name on “America’s Got Talent,” join the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for a pops concert including classics such as “God Bless the USA,” “Amazing Grace,” “Unchained Melody,” “Nessun Dorma” and more. The singers — John Hagen, Marcus Collins and JC Fisher — are joined by a full orchestral complement, led by resident conductor Lawrence Loh.

The trio will sign merchandise in the Heinz Hall lobby following the performances, which take place 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets: $24.75-$99.75; 412-392-4900 or pittsburghsymphony.org.
