Bethel Park routs Canon-McMillan

Black Hawks snatch section lead from No. 2 Big Macs

The Bethel Park softball team surged into the Class AAAA Section 4 lead Thursday.

The opponent the Black Hawks did it against and how they did it was the big surprise.

Bethel Park used a 10-run third inning to roll to a 14-4 six-inning win against No. 2 Canon-McMillan.

It was the first section loss for visiting Canon-McMillan (7-2, 5-1), the three-time defending section champion.

Haley Reid had three hits and four RBIs for the Black Hawks (9-3, 8-1), who have scored 53 runs in their past four games.

Ashley Burford added a three-run triple.

Linda Rush homered for Canon-McMillan.

Bethel Park, Canon-McMillan and Baldwin (7-1) have one section loss.

Canon-McMillan beat Bethel Park, 12-10, Mar. 30.

Other top softball games

Kelsey Feeney’s two-run home run in the sixth helped Fox Chapel (8-2, 7-1) claim a 3-0 win at Franklin Regional (10-4, 6-3) in Class AAAA Section 2.

Kellyn Perich fired a nohitter with eight strikeouts to vault host Peters Township (7-6) to a 13-0 five-inning rout of Brooke, W.Va.

Macy Mularski tossed a two-hitter and Olivia Miller had two home runs and seven RBIs in leading Class AAA No. 3 Yough (9-3, 8-0) to a 12-1 win at Mount Pleasant (5-6, 5-4) in Section 4.

Kat Bittner’s RBI single capped a six-run seventh that propelled Class AAA Section 5 leader Hampton (8-2, 7-1) to a 10-9 victory at Knoch (7-6, 4-3).

Winning pitcher Erica Burns snapped a tie by hitting a two-run double in the seventh and Carmichael­s (8-2, 8-0) went on to win at Brownsvill­e (4-6, 4-5), 6-2, in Class AA Section 2.

Tristan Voss threw a nohitter to help Class AA No. 4 Mohawk (10-0, 10-0) remain unbeaten after a 5-0 victory against visiting Neshannock (4-6, 4-5) in Section 5.

Fort Cherry ends streak

Fort Cherry (1-7, 1-6) snapped a 48-game losing streak by routing visiting Avella (2-7, 1-6), 24-1, in three innings in Class A Section 1. Klarissa Diamond hit a grand slam for the Rangers, who had not won since 2012.

Top baseball games

Josh Kieffer had three RBIs and Greg Yaksich added two to help Fox Chapel (8-4, 5-1) take over the lead in Class AAAA Section 4 courtesy of a 9-6 victory at No. 3 Shaler (10-3, 4-2).

Vince Augustine’s RBI double in the eighth gave Class AAAA No. 4 Seneca Valley (6-4, 5-1) a 5-4 win at Moon (7-4, 2-4) in Section 1.

Austin Kitchen pitched a two-hitter and struck out 13 in leading Class AAAA No. 1 Mt. Lebanon (10-1, 7-0) to a 3-1 triumph against visiting Canon-McMillan (7-4, 4-3) in Section 5.

Brownsvill­e (9-1, 6-0) took over first place in Class AA Section 2 after an 11-0 five-inning home win against No. 4 Washington (6-2, 6-1). Ken Ryan and Shane Roebuck had three hits apiece.

Winning pitcher Evan Kendall improved to 4-0 and added two RBIs to help Shenango (6-5, 4-2) win at Class AA No. 5 Riverside (92, 4-2), 7-5, in Section 5.

Unusual result

It took Class AAAA No. 5 Franklin Regional (10-2, 5-1) 10 innings to get its offense going, the end result a 9-0 win at Brashear (0-9, 0-6) in Section 4. Winning pitcher Luciano Besh struck out 12 in nine innings.

Connellsvi­lle javelin star Madison Wiltrout set a WPIAL record with a throw of 168 feet, 5 inches at the prestigiou­s Penn Relays in Philadelph­ia. It’s the secondlong­est throw in the country this season.
