Beaver County road program
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will spend approximately $75 million this year to repair roads and bridges in Beaver County.
District 11 will invest an estimated $31 million in eight projects to improve, preserve or rehabilitate transportation infrastructure, such as 10 bridges — three structurally deficient.
Also, 19 miles of roads will be paved or resurfaced. Approximately 11 projects, valued at an estimated $44 million, will be bid this year.
Here’s a roundup of some projects:
Third Street, Beaver — This $3.48 million project started last year to improve the street between Buffalo Street and the B&O Railroad overpass/Bridgewater inter-change. The work involves milling and resurfacing 1 mile of the street, concrete reconstruction, traffic signal upgrades, signing and pavement markings. Work remaining involves completing a handicapped curb cut. The project is expected to be completed in mid-summer.
Route 18, Beaver Falls — This $6.64 million project to rehabilitate approximately 1 mile of Route 18 (Fourth Avenue) between 32nd Street and Wallace Run Road (Route 551) began in June 2014 with utility relocation work. Long-term restrictions and single-lane alternating traffic will occur this year as roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements, traffic signal replacement, curb cut ramps, pavement markings and other miscellaneous construction begins. Work is scheduled to be completed in December.
Route 51, Aliquippa — Work will begin in July on this estimated $2 million-3 million project to reconstruct the city drainage system. No traffic restrictions will occur on Route 51, but Woodlawn Road will be closed. The project will conclude by the end of the year.
Freedom Crider Road, New Sewickley — This estimated $3 million-5 million project to rehabilitate and resurface the road between Route 989 and the Butler County border will begin this month. The work will involve milling and resurfacing, shoulder improvements, signage upgrades, guiderail improvements and minor drainage and signal upgrades. Daily traffic restrictions will occur during off-peak hours. The project’s estimated completion is August.
Interstate 376, Center and Hopewell — Work is underway to preserve four bridges over Raccoon Creek. The $2.37 million bridge preservation project involves deck joint replacement, approach slab replacement, structural steel repairs, substructure repairs, parapet repairs and several safety improvements. Traffic is being restricted to a single lane in each direction. Work is expected to be completed by September.
Service Creek Road, Independence — Set to begin in August, this $1.47 million project will replace the structure that carries Service Creek Road over Service Creek. The road will be closed and traffic detoured. Work will continue until late September.
