Millennials on the move

-

This year the Millennials are projected to become the world’s largest living generation by the US Census Bureau. Millennials (generally defined as Americans ages 18 to 34) are projected to number 75.3 million, surpassing the projected 74.9 million Boomers (ages 51 to 69). The Gen X population (ages 35 to 50) is projected to outnumber the Boomers by 2028.

In March 2015, the U.S. Census Bureau released new data on trends in community residency and the results were not what you might have guessed. Historically speaking, housing data indicated that millennials seemed to prefer metropolitan areas. Recent data indicates that trend is changing with 529,000 young Americans ages 25 to 29 moving from cities out to the suburbs in 2014; only 426,000 moved in the other direction. Among younger millennials, those in their early 20s, the trend was even starker: 721,000 moved out of the city, compared with 554,000 who moved in. More millennials in both age groups currently live in the suburbs than in the city. Largely, more young Americans today are moving to the suburbs from urban centers than previously thought.

While Millennials are moving to the suburbs at slightly slower rates than previous generations did at their age, the draw of the suburban lifestyle remains strong. These trends show that while even though many metropolitan areas are experiencing a renaissance in population growth, most Millennials still dream of the white picket fence and the suburban lifestyle.

Suburban communities in the greater Pittsburgh area, such as Centennial Pointe in Collier Township and Dutch Creek Estates in Zelienople, take advantage of the millennial buyers needs. By offering easy access to the Downtown area, the newly developed Settlers Ridge shopping district and Cranberry business corridor, these new suburban communities are in high demand.
