USA routs Canada

The United States defeated Canada, 7-2, Saturday to advance to the final of the under-18 world hockey championsh­ips in Zug, Switzerlan­d.

Kevin White had three goals and Auston Matthews two for the Americans, who outshot Canada, 38-18. The Canadians, a three-time winner of this tournament, entered the game with five consecutiv­e wins.

The U.S. team will play for the gold medal today.

The Americans opened the third period with a one-goal lead before Matthews and White scored 32 seconds apart to make it 4-1. Mitchell Stephens cut into the deficit but Jordan Greenway answered for the U.S. team.

Soccer

Kevin Kerr scored on a penalty kick in the 40th minute and added two assists, and Rob Vincent tallied the go-ahead goal in the 56th as the Riverhound­s defeated Toronto FC II, 5-1, in United Soccer League Pro action at Highmark Stadium.

Tennis

Defending champion Kei Nishikori is back in the final of the Barcelona Open in Spain after beating Martin Klizan of Slovakia, 6-1, 6-2. Nishikori won the first five games of the match and saved all six of Klizan’s break points.

• Fourth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki reached the Porsche Grand Prix final in Stuttgart, Germany, with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 win over second-seeded Simona Halep. Wozniacki, of Denmark, needed almost three hours to prevail, winning four games in a row in the third set.

• Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain and Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic will play for their second ATP title of the year in the Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest, Romania, where they will meet for the first time on tour. The final was set up when Garcia-Lopez lost his serve only once in beating Gael Monfils of France, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-2, and Vesely also staged a comeback to top Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Track and field

Porscha Lucas led Team USA to victory in the women’s 800-meter relay at the Penn Relays in Philadelph­ia and the Americans won four of six events in the USA vs. The World races. Leslie Cole, Tawanna Meadows and Cambrya Jones also were on the relay team that beat Jamaica by seven-thousandth­s of a second in the first 800 relay at the meet since 2004. The Americans finished in 1:31.972 at Franklin Field.

• Jasmin Stowers blew past a 100-meter hurdles field that included 2012 Olympic gold medalist Dawn Harper-Nelson and Queen Harrison to win in a record 12.40 seconds at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. Harper-Nelson was second in 12.71, followed by Kristi Castlin in 12.72. Francena McCoroy broke a 28-year-old meet record in the 400, posting a world-leading 50.13.

Running

Scott Wietecha won the St. Jude Country Music Marathon in Nashville, Tenn., for a third consecutiv­e year, finishing in 2:23:39. Geoffrey Kiptoo finished second in 2:33:57. Melanie Kulesz won the women’s competitio­n in 3:04:34.
