Nearly century-old house in Edgewood is colorful, comfortable

When Christine Nelson moved to Pittsburgh in 2013, she didn’t think her stay in 115 W. Hutchinson St., Edgewood, would be so brief.

“I loved it the first time I saw it. I am going to be traveling a bit and that kind of thing, so I decided to sell it,” she said.

Now the house is on the market for $299,000 (MLS No. 1066263) with Bernie Kuhn of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services (412-421-9120 or www.howardhanna.com). It’s open by appointment.

Built in 1917, the red brick-andshingle home has a large front porch and mature landscaping to set it off. The front door leads to a 20-by-12-foot living room that is staged for TV viewing to the left and reading to the right. The pale yellow walls contrast nicely with the hardwood floors. The 12-by-12-foot kitchen in the rear was remodeled by a past owner, who created an opening in the wall with the dining room. It features white cabinets with softclose hinges and some glass-front doors. Light gray marble counter tops complement the white subway tile backsplash and the stainlesssteel appliances.

Newer hardwood floors link the kitchen and the adjacent dining room, which measures 14 by 10 feet. There is also a first-floor powder room.

French doors in the dining room lead to the back porch and backyard. The covered porch has room for a grill and the backyard and deck were made for entertaining. Garden beds contain flowers and vegetables.

“I put a few trees in the back there — cherry trees,” Ms. Nelson said. “The grandchildren came over and they loved it. It is nice and quiet, very peaceful.”

On the second floor, the 11-by-14foot master bedroom is painted a soft blue and its painted brick fireplace has a gas-burning insert. A red ceramic-tile hearth contrasts with the lightly stained hardwood floors.

The second bedroom measures 16 by 10 feet and is a deep earthy orange with white blinds. “I painted that room, too. It was already orange, but a different
