A Carrick woman told police that she fatally stabbed her brother after he attacked her when she confronted him about slapping his girlfriend.

Monica Brown, 30, was arrested late Saturday and charged with homicide in the death of Machi Brown, 27, of Mount Oliver.

Emergency crews were called to a residence on Merritt Avenue in Carrick around 10:20 p.m. Saturday for a report of a stabbing, city public safety spokeswoman Emily Schaffer said. There, Machi Brown was pronounced dead from two stab wounds, according to police.

Monica Brown told investigators that her brother had been drinking and slapped his girlfriend, Mia Thomas. She said that when her brother drank he became “aggressive and argumentative” and “has a history of being abusive with women,” a police affidavit said.

Monica Brown said that when she went into the kitchen to confront her brother about hitting his girlfriend he became “very aggressive” and began arguing with her.

Then she said he assaulted her.

Monica Brown said her brother began dragging her around the kitchen by her hair, and when she tried fighting him off he grabbed her by the neck.

She said she grabbed a knife from the kitchen counter in an attempt to “scare” her brother, but he continued attacking her and she stabbed him in the shoulder. In the same motion, she said, she accidentally stabbed herself in the left hand.

He kept coming at her, she said, and she stabbed him in the chest.

Her brother immediately fell to the floor, she said, and she dropped the knife and tried rendering first aid. But by the time paramedics arrived at the residence, he was dead.

Monica Brown faces a preliminary hearing Friday.
