Man charged in assault on Shuman employee
A Carrick man who was convicted in March of threatening a crisis specialist at Shuman Juvenile Detention Center has been arrested again, accused of assaulting the same person.
Cody Jay Smith, 20, was charged with aggravated assault, assault by prisoner and retaliation against witness or victim.
The incident happened Friday at 2:30 p.m. in a classroom at Shuman and was caught on video, Allegheny County Police said in an affidavit.
Mr. Smith punched Todd O’Toole in the face and head in an unprovoked assault, the affidavit said.
He pleaded guilty March 22 to terroristic threats and simple assault in connection with an incident at Shuman on Feb. 4, 2015.
Police said Mr. Smith threatened to kill Mr. O’Toole and aggressively approached him while holding a pencil.
He was given two years probation.
