Sanders supporters must now move on

-

I was an early Bernie Sanders supporter. I listened to his “An Hour With America’s Senator,” a weekly radio segment on “The Thom Hartmann Show” for about 10 years.

It was there that I first learned that the Republican billionaires spent hundreds of millions of dollars buying 37 state legislatures during the 2010 election. Bernie explained that these legislatures gerrymandered their states to allow the Republicans to control the U.S. House of Representatives, despite not winning the majority of the states’ votes.

I realize that if we do not elect a Democratic Congress, nothing is going to change. I realize that if we elect a Republican president along with the rightwing Congress a lot is going to change. Congress controls all spending. Let that sink in — spending.

To all you so-called liberals who voted for Ralph Nader in 2000, I hold you directly responsible for George W. Bush and the Iraq War. There are two parties that have a chance to win control of this government. One is a right-wing oligarchy (one of Bernie’s favorite words); the other is a center-left party that will attempt to help all of the people.

Obviously the Republicans don’t care who leads their ticket. If you are heartbroken over Bernie, get over it. Bernie did. TOM HUTCHISON Braddock Hills

We welcome your opinion

I never realized that as a conservative Republican, Christian, white male and veteran what a horrible hatefilled racist, xenophobic, misogynist and all-around horrible person I am. Thanks to Rob Rogers’ July 21 cartoon and Oren Spiegler’s July 21 letter (“Republicans Should Regret Their Nominee Choice”), I now know that Republicans are racists, bigots and intolerant. I now realize how tolerant liberals are. I could definitely feel the love.

To a liberal, compassion is when the government forcibly takes someone’s hard-earned money to give to someone else who didn’t earn it so that the government can create a culture of dependency and rob people of the joy of being self-reliant and free to determine their own future — thus stealing that person’s dignity. And that is what a liberal calls compassion?

To a conservative, compassion is giving of one’s self, time, heart and money to help our fellow man.

Gentlemen, please don’t pretend to know what is in my heart. I wonder if they have ever really been exposed to the disaster created by liberal government social programs. Please don’t try to clear your conscience by diminishing others who hold a different opinion and experience than yours. Practice tolerance! NICK REDONDO Friendship

Alan Schultz’s assertion that mass shooters are not law-abiding citizens and are criminals or nut jobs is only half correct (”Mass Shooters Aren’t LawAbiding Gun Owners,” July 23 letters).

No one would deny they are nut jobs. However, none of them were criminals when they purchased their guns; they became criminals when they started pulling their triggers.

What is so disingenuous about this argument is that the gun advocates work tirelessly to ensure the nut jobs have every opportunity to purchase the armament in the style and quantity they want in order to shoot the masses. PAUL FISCHER
