Charleroi edges old rival, 23-21

Week “0” 2016 will be one to remember for Charleroi.

The Cougars traveled to Monessen for the 100th meeting between the schools in a rivalry dating back to 1905. But in their first meeting since 2007, they knocked off the Greyhounds, 23-21, and picked up their first win since 2014.

Monessen took an early 13-7 lead but Charleroi scored 16 unanswered points in the second quarter to take control of the game.

Sean’s Cole 33-yard field goal in the second quarter proved to be the difference. and two touchdowns on the road to lead the Trojans.

Hopewell 36, Freedom 24: William DePaul’s two touchdowns were the difference in the Vikings’ road win.

Mount Pleasant 45, Laurel Highlands 21: Five Vikings players found the end zone as Mount Pleasant routed visiting Laurel Highlands.

Apollo-Ridge 27, Leechburg 14: Brett Coleman rushed for 128 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Vikings to their third consecutiv­e seasonopen­ing win.

Westinghou­se 41, Greensburg Central Catholic. 14: The Commodores stunned the Centurions on the road behind three touchdowns from Wade Yurko.
