Trickle-down economics simply doesn’t work

-

Liquidated, money seems to flow uphill very well. But once there, it seems to freeze. At the higher elevations it is no longer liquid. This is why 90 percent of the assets in America are owned by 5 percent of the population. The “trickle-down theory,” also known as “supplyside” economics or “Reaganomics” does not work.

When the worker gets paid, he spends his money. The money flows uphill. When the entrepreneur gets it, the money stays at the top. The trickledown “drops” result in 95 percent of the people owning just 10 percent of the wealth.

Our elected government has to adjust this unfair distribution of wealth, or the blood in the streets will get worse. Raising the minimum wage would be a good start. Increasing the taxes on the rich would be another. After all, the wealthy got where they are on the backs of the productive workers who were worth more than they were paid. (If workers were not worth more than they are paid, who would hire them?)

The elected government is supposed to be “of the people, by the people, for the people,” as Abraham Lincoln stated at Gettysburg. Contrary to what John F. Kennedy said in his inaugural address, the people should ask what their country could do for them. They have already done enough for their country. It’s their turn for some governmental help. It’s time to vote! GENE KUBAN

Eighty Four to relative until they’re old enough to be turned out to fend for themselves. The basic rights of any child born should be acknowledged and supported.

The fundamental truths are that people are going to have sex and not always use some kind of protection. Reproductive health and education must be part of children’s education. Contraceptive means must be much more widely available than seems to be the case. Abortion is truly a last resort. Nobody gets pregnant in order to have an abortion, but that choice should be available when other methods fail. C. HUBER

As I looked at the Sept. 12 fullpage ad with a photo of mother, grandmother, former nun and Catholic Linda Pinto and read her statement about how she supports abortion, I was reminded of another grandmother’s statement I recently read about the murder of her unborn grandson, who died at the hands of assailant Eric Taylor. Eric Taylor has been sentenced to 22½ to 45 years in prison for the death of unborn Darren Lee Crawford and the wounding of Darren’s mother, DaRae Delgado (“Killer of Teen’s Unborn Child Gets Lengthy Prison Term,” Aug. 4).

Darren’s grandmother, DeAnna Weems, stated, “Instead of this innocent baby having a chance to continue to grow, he had to be a shield to

protect his mom and didn’t even know.”

Similarly, a recent headline about the mass slaying in Wilkinsburg last March read “DA Seeks Death Penalty in Cookout Massacre: 5 Adults, Unborn Child Killed in Wilkinsburg,” Aug. 27).

Please tell me, Ms. Pinto and others of you who support abortion, how is it that assailants, supposed thugs, get prison terms for the deaths of unborn children while abortionists do the very same thing — kill innocent babes in the womb — and we call it ethical and legal?

For more reasons than that, I will vote for Donald Trump in November. Among many other Christian values that he possesses is the sanctity of human life. JUDY GARVIN Ellwood City
