Foliage is not the only draw to a fall driving tour of the Laurel Highlands on Saturday.

The tour starts at Lick Hollow State Forest’s Picnic Pavilion — just east of Uniontown on U.S. Route 40 — for coffee/doughnuts, a brief program and description of the tour’s itinerary. Following the route in the accompanying booklet, participants will follow the National Road and Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridors, as well as the Laurel Highlands Scenic Byway, to visit two other state parks, a state forest, the village of Ohiopyle and other attractions, including, if they choose, recommended eateries. They’ll end up in the Ligonier/Latrobe area at the Lincoln Highway Experience for a social that includes hearty appetizers and wine and beer.

Cost is $12 per person, which includes entrance fees to two historic sites, where docents will be waiting to show visitors around.

The total mileage is about 135, says Donna Holdorf, executive director of the National Road Heritage Corridor. “We had an inquiry from someone in Maryland about the mileage so he could explore where he can charge his Tesla!”

The event is sponsored by the two heritage corridors as well as the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to introduce residents to charms in their own backyard, says Laurel Ridge State Park superintendent Mike Mumau. “The tour itinerary will take people to some amazing places that they may not know exist and encourage them to come back and explore more.”
