No. 3 Fox Chapel stunned

Peters Township holds on for 1-0 victory after early goal by LaVigna

Regan LaVigna scored the only goal in the 7th minute, and Peters Township (6-3-1) held on for a 1-0 non-section upset victory on the road against Class 4A No. 3 Fox

Chapel in girls soccer. It was the first lost this season for the Foxes (9-1-0), who had shut out their previous three opponents and allowed four goals this season before the game. Fox Chapel also had scored 47 goals in their past six matches.

Conversely, Peters Township was coming off back-toback shutout losses against Upper St. Clair and No. 2 Canon-McMillan.

Freedom (12-0-0) picked up goals from Taylor Petroff and Myla Sharpless and posted its third consecutiv­e shutout and eighth this season as the Class 2A No. 1 Bulldogs pulled out a 2-0 Section 1 victory against Avonworth (7-41, 3-3-1).

Bailey Cartwright scored her 30th and 31st goals of the season to give her 197 in her career to lead Class 1A No. 1 Greensburg Central

Catholic (9-1-0, 6-0-0) to its ninth consecutiv­e win, a 7-1 home decision against Section 1 foe Riverview (5-5-0, 3-4-0). Cartwright needs 16 more goals to eclipse the state record of 212 set by her former teammate Frannie Crouse.

For the second time this season, Seton-LaSalle pushed Class 1A No. 2 Bentworth to the brink only to lose in the end. This time, Jocelyn Timlin scored the only goal in the second half to give the Bearcats (10-0-0, 7-0-0) a 1-0 Section 2 win against the Rebels (6-4-0, 5-2-0) after a 3-2 win in their first meeting.

Oakland Catholic (9-00, 7-0-0) remained undefeated thanks to Cleveland State recruit Essence Canady, who scored the only goal to give the Class 3A No. 3 Eagles a 1-0 win against Section 3 rival Thomas Jefferson (7-4-0, 4-4-0).

Waynesburg (9-1-0, 6-0-0) got a scare against Brownsvill­e (1-10-0, 0-60) before Madison Clayton scored the only goal with less than three minutes remaining as the Class 2A No. 2 Raiders pulled out a 1-0 victory against the Falcons.

Senior Elsa Antal notched her first career hat trick to help Riverside (6-2-1, 4-2-0) win its second consecutiv­e match in a 5-1 decision at Neshannock (3-9-0, 1-5-0) that avenged an earlier, 1-0 loss to the Lancers.

Delaney Snyder took care of the offense with three goals as Class 3A No. 1 Moon (10-1-0, 8-0-0) remained undefeated in Section 4 with a 7-1 win against Blackhawk (3-6-1, 2-6-1). It was the Tigers’ second consecutiv­e victory after a 3-0 loss Saturday against Class AAAA Seneca Valley.

A day before the WPIAL Class 2A individual championsh­ips at Allegheny Country Club, Sewickley Academy got one more chance to play the course and clinched its 12th consecutiv­e section title with a 191-217 victory against

Quaker Valley. Defending WPIAL individual champion Jason Li was the low scorer for the Panthers with a 2-over 37.

Alex Lawson followed up a solid seventh-place showing at the WPIAL Class 3A individual semifinals with a 2-under 34 at Meadowink to help Fox

Chapel to a 190-197 victory against host Franklin Regional in a key Section 4 matchup. The Panthers’ Palmer Jackson and the Foxes’ Anthony Cordaro, who tied for first at the semifinal Tuesday at Hannastown, each shot 37.

Girls golf

Shady Side Academy’s Alexandra Muracco and Casey Morrow each shot 42 to help the Indians to a 191-192 victory against Fox Chapel in a Class 3A Section 4 matchup. Both players qualified for the WPIAL individual final Wednesday at Treesdale.

Girls tennis

Top seeds and defending champions North Allegheny and Beaver had easy times in their first-round matches in the WPIAL team playoffs. The Tigers opened defense of their 3A title with a 5-0 win against Oakland Catholic while the Bobcats rolled over

Burrell, 5-0, in the Class 2A first- round match. There was only one first-round upset as Class 3A No. 9 Montour beat No. 8 Franklin Regional, 4-1.
