-

With a new coach at the helm, California football is off to its best start since 2012.

Michael Keir threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns, Garry Brown caught six passes for 136 yards and two scores, and the 24th-ranked Vulcans beat No. 9 Slippery Rock, 52-26, at home for the biggest win so far under Gary Dunn.

The Vulcans (4-0, 2-0) led, 28-7, at halftime and handed the Rock (4-1, 1-1) its first PSAC West loss in more than a year. Their win also sets up a showdown next week with rival IUP after the No. 8 Crimson Hawks (4-0, 2-0) rallied for a 47-39 win against visiting Seton Hill (3-2, 0-2).

Liberty 31, Robert Morris 7: Former Freeport standout Andrew Romanchak tossed a 2-yard touchdown to Blake Skuratowicz in the first quarter, but that’s all the Colonials (1-4) could muster in a loss at the Flames (2-3).

Thomas More 45, Westminster 35:

Carnegie Mellon 49, Bethany 26: Sam Benger rushed for 174 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Tartans (2-2, 2-1 PAC) past the Bison (1-4, 0-3) at home.

Waynesburg 14, Grove City 10: Aaron Jenkins scored from 1 yard with 12:33 left and it stood up as the winner to lift the Yellow Jackets (1-4, 1-2) past the host Wolverines (0-5, 0-3).
