Night of 1,000 Elvises

-

When and where: The Andy Warhol Museum, North Side, on Saturday night.

Elvis Has (Not) Left the Building: Last year was the first time The Warhol held the “Night of 1,000 Andys” event and it was a great success, so you could feel the intense energy and excitement in the museum as partygoers flooded the space for this year’s much-anticipated “Night of 1,000 Elvises.” “Andy loved icons and who is more of a pop icon than Elvis? The great thing about this event is that it can be reinvented every year with another beloved pop culture icon,” said Jose Diaz, Milton Fine Curator of Art. (And a few little birds told me that next year’s icon will be Marilyn Monroe! Be still my heart, and I hope Richard Parsakian of Eons Fashion Antique has a hotline because everyone in Pittsburgh will want to dress as the queen of all the Hollywood starlets.) Everywhere you turned, Elvis was alive and well. He was curling his lip in the photo booth, he was posing for pictures in the auditorium, he was playing craps in the VIP lounge with Ann McGuinn and Aradhna Oliphant. “We flew in for just tonight from Miami for the party!” said Carlos Betancourt. He and his Elvis posse — including Alberto Latorre, Shane Elipot, Charly Delago and Carl Pascuzzi — all came dressed to impress in different themed looks like Elvis goes to prison, Elvis plays the ukulele and Elvis in the Army. It was quite remarkable to see kids get into the spirit, such as 9-year-old Lyla Horn pulling off the attitude of one of the 1950s’ Pink Ladies. So what would Warhol think of all these Elvis impersonators taking selfies at the party? “Andy coined the phrase ‘15 minutes of fame’ and he would totally appreciate the selfieculture and the idea of instantaneous (albeit) fleeting fame,” said Paula Lockwood. Sounds like this party would have had Andy ‘all shook up!’
