Carnegie to host van Herpen exhibit
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Come 2017, another fashion exhibition is poised for Pittsburgh.
The Carnegie Museum of Art will welcome “Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion” Feb. 4 through May 1. It examines seven years of the Dutch fashion designer’s haute couture creations and how they marry inventive technology, handcrafted artistry and precision for a unique futuristic aesthetic. Pittsburgh will be the easternmost U.S. city to present the show during its first North American tour.
“Pittsburgh is a city of creative makers and fabricators, a center of technology and robotics, and a supportive place for artists. A growing tech sector and continued reckoning with its industrial past uniquely positions the city to respond to van Herpen’s designs, which are inspired by neuroscience and microbes, science fiction and the environment,” museum officials said in a statement.
Ms. van Herpen’s designs are a favorite of celebrities such as Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Scarlett Johansson, and they have been included in major exhibitions like The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s spring 2016 show “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.”
The exhibition is organized by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands.
