Thanks to RAD, the county has cultural depth that’s enviable

-

On behalf of the arts and culture community, I want to thank the Allegheny Regional Asset District for the good news of the 2017 budget, which makes operating increases to many assets, much-needed discretionary capital for infrastructure, and renewed funding for accessibility — ensuring that patrons with disabilities can enjoy the arts.

We’re not Los Angeles or New York City, so it may come as a surprise that Allegheny County is the envy of many cultural epicenters, including our friends across the commonwealth, because we’re fortunate to reap the benefits of RAD.

Fifty percent of Allegheny County’s additional 1 percent sales tax is given to RAD to support regional assets that benefit our lives: libraries, parks and recreation, arts and culture, and sports and civic facilities. In 2017, RAD will distribute $98.4 million. Of that total, 12 percent will be allocated to arts and culture.

With the changing landscape of support for nonprofit arts organizations, RAD stands consistent, even expanding its reach with an improved vetting process resulting in nine grantees receiving grants for the first time. Its volunteer board spends many hours considering requests, visiting organizations and attending community events. I doubt many people fully understand the level of commitment needed to do this job well, which is why I’m writing this letter.

We greatly appreciate the work of the RAD board, executive director Richard Hudic and RAD’s committed staff. Thank you for the good news that we can continue to bring a robust arts and culture community to the region. MITCH SWAIN CEO Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council Downtown
