Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Michael A. Fuoco’s five-part series “What Cost Freedom?” has been recognized by the annual John Jay College/ Harry Frank Guggenheim awards for excellence in criminal justice reporting.

Mr. Fuoco’s series of occasional stories examined the case of Lewis Jim Fogle, who was exonerated in 2015 after serving 34 years for a murder he did not commit. It was honored in the competitio­n’s series category, tying for runner-up with a Baltimore Sun series on fatal shootings in major cities.

“This is the sort of work that underlines the utility and indispensa­bility of newspapers,” said David M. Shribman, the Post-Gazette’s executive editor and vice president.

The John Jay Center on Media, Crime and Justice recognizes the nation’s best print and online justice reporting. The top finishers this year were Shane Bauer of Mother Jones in the single-story category and ProPublica in the series category. two men came in through an unlocked door.

Investigat­ors said the victim was shot in the head. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Police from Baldwin and Brentwood were using flashlight­s to search for evidence around and beneath vehicles on the street. Officials with the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office arrived about 10 p.m.

Investigat­ors took three people to Allegheny County Police headquarte­rs in Point Breeze for questionin­g. No arrests had been made as of late Tuesday.

Police said they were called to the same house for a similar incident about 15 months ago.
