North Allegheny pins down win
No. 2 Tigers top North Hills for 3B’s top spot
The WPIAL concluded its section wrestling schedule Wednesday night. The top three finishers in each sub-section qualify for the section team tournaments Jan. 25 at seven sites. Here’s a look at the top matches:
Class 3A
• No. 2 North Allegheny (5-0) earned the top spot in Section 3B with a 41-25 victory against North Hills (3-2) as Gabe Falo (120), Will Baierl (132), Jon Hoover (152), Eric Hong (160) and Jake Woodley (220) recorded pins for North Allegheny.
• No. 7 Butler (5-0) won in a battle of Section 3A unbeatens with a 47-21 home win against No. 10 Seneca Valley that clinched a home site for the Section 3 tournament. Cam Weisenstein (106), Caleb Baxter (160), Christian Sequete (182), Tom Greaves (195) and Seth McCrae (285) had pins.
• No. 3 Canon-McMillan (5-0) claimed first place in Section 4A with a 62-9 domination of visiting Trinity (3-2). The Big Macs will host the Section 4 tournament next week. Ken Hayman (113), Tony Mastrangelo (126), Tim Hritsko (138), Gerrit Nijenhuis (152), Blaze Kansco (170), Bryan Milligan (182) and Zach Rohaley (220) registered pins for the Big Macs.
• No. 4 Belle Vernon (40) broke the tie for first place in Section 2A with a 37-29 road win against Connellsville (3-1). The Leopards earned the home site in Section 2.
• No. 5 Franklin Regional (5-0) claimed the top spot in Section 1B with a 34-27 victory against No. 9 Penn-Trafford (3-2). Logan Miller clinched the win for the Panthers with a 2-1 overtime win over Matt Wilkey at 220 pounds..
Class 2A
• No. 8 Burgettstown (50) upset No. 6 ChartiersHouston (4-1) 39-33 to win Section 1A. The Blue Devils will play host in Section 1 after Billy Brown (106), Austin Ryan (120) and Ethan Brothers (195) recorded pins.
• No. 2 Derry Area (5-0) claimed the top spot in Section 2B with a 49-15 win against Mount Pleasant (3-2). Jason Baker (120), Trey Weinell (145) and Colton Nemcheck (170) had pins for Derry.
• No. 1 Burrell (5-0) earned the top spot in Section 3B by beating No. 7 Valley (4-1), 48-27.
