Samuelsson chases coaching dream

-

do well — get the most out of each player,” Samuelsson said. “I have experience from my own playing career. A lot of people probably said I was an average skilled player or maybe below average. I had a hell of a career.

“I’ve also gone through it with four of my own kids, seeing them develop, and I’ve helped them along the line. They’re all playing high level ice hockey. I’ve always had interest in young players’ development on and off the ice. It’s been a lot of fun to do that hands-on.”

The Checkers have been up and down this season. They lost three of four to start, then won six in a row. Losses in seven of nine to finish November. Three wins in December.

It hasn’t been easy, but injuries to the NHL club have also robbed Samuelsson of some of his top players. Samuelsson hasn’t found fault in the process.

“Our results have not been up to our standards,” Samuelsson said.

One funny thing for Penguins fans — two, actually — is that Samuelsson now works for Ron Francis, the general manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, and his equipment manager in Charlotte is Steve Latin, another Penguins alum.

Samuelsson credits his communication with Francis and assistant general manager/director of hockey operations Mike Velluci for an enjoyable situation and making him better as a head coach.

“The only bad thing is that every time [Francis] calls, he’s stealing my players,” Samuelsson joked. “Other than that, it’s been good.

“They’re doing a great job. Good prospects, both with [the NHL club] and us. I think the future is bright for the organization.

“For me, I think my experience here with the Checkers is certainly something that will help my career and help me when I get an interview the next time.”
