Maryland senior guard stakes claim as one of the best in the country

Just call Walker-Kimbrough one of the top 25 women’s college basketball players in the country. Walker-Kimbrough is a senior guard at the University of Maryland who was recently named to the John R. Wooden Award top 25 midseason list. The award goes to the No. 1 player in the country. Walker-Kimbrough entered the week averaging 16.9 points a game and shooting 43 percent (30 of 70) from 3-point range for the Terrapins, ranked No. 3 in the country.

Jeannette grad wastes little time making his mark at Long Island

Batts is having a nice freshman season for the Long Island University men’s basketball team. A freshman point guard from Jeannette, Batts is playing 21 minutes a game and has started six. He is a averaging 4.1 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.7 assists. Batts graduated from Jeannette in 2015 and spent a year at St. Thomas More, a prep school in Connecticu­t. Long Island started the week tied for first in the Northeast Conference.

Former Mars standout emerges as top freshman at Shippensbu­rg

Castello is one of the best freshmen basketball players in the country for NCAA Division II. That’s what herosports.com said recently when it named Castello one of the top five freshmen in Division II. Castello is a forward who graduated from Mars and now plays for Shippensbu­rg University. He began the week averaging 11 points and 9 rebounds a game. The rebound average was tops for Division II freshmen in the country.
