Bishop predicts more revamps
under review, is expected to result in the closure of dozens of churches and the merger of most parishes.
The North Hills school reorganization, announced Saturday after months of study and recommendations by local task forces, will essentially result in the closure of one school and leave five others operating on a total of 10 campuses:
St. Alexis in McCandless and St. Alphonsus in Pine will merge, with the pre-kindergarten students based at St. Alexis and students in kindergarten through eighth grade at St. Alphonsus.
St. Sebastian will merge with St. Teresa of Avila, both in Ross, with students in first through eighth grade based at St. Sebastian and the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students at St. Teresa of Avila.
St. Mary of the Assumption in Hampton, St. Bonaventure in Shaler and St. Ursula in Hampton will combine, with the pre-kindergarten students at St. Bonaventure and K-8 students at St. Mary. St. Ursula’s school, whose enrollment is down to 81, lowest of any school involved in the reorganization plan, will close in June.
Assumption in Bellevue and Northside Catholic in Brighton Heights won’t immediately change but will do strategic studies for the 201718 academic year. The schools have enrollments of 131 and 107, respectively, among the lowest in the North Hills area.
St. James in Sewickley and Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy in Aspinwall will remain operating as they are.
