CMU grad makes great first impression on ‘The Voice’

• When reality competition shows change the rules, it’s generally an irritation. Kudos to Syfy’s “Face Off” (Tuesday) for bringing back a pretty cool twist. The bottom designers were given an extra hour to go back and change their creations, taking to heart the judges’ critiques.

The results will be shown on next week’s episode.

In the meantime, it was a great outing for Cig Neutron (Tom Savini program in Monessen) and George Troester III (Art Institute of Pittsburgh). The two scored top marks in a challenge that asked the designers to create drivers for those “Mad Max”-ish vehicles in dystopian films.

The two won for their crazy cigarette-smokin’ lady — you know, the one with the metal-gear mohawk on her bald head.

They have been like silly schoolgirls all season, wearing matching outfits to the Reveal Stage, short shorts, goofy hats (a Cig Neutron trademark), and they clearly are just enjoying the ride.

Next week: puppets! We might hope for evil puppets, as if there were any other kind.

• Let the screaming begin: Mary Murphy will return as a judge on Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” this summer.

The very vocal Ms. Murphy, who was let go after season 11, is on board for season 14 with the show’s longtime judge and creator, Nigel Lythgoe. A third judge has yet to be named. Last season, Paula Abdul, Jason Derulo and Pittsburgh native Maddie Ziegler were judges for a kids version of the program.
