We need leaders who have foresight on transit

-

I was disappointed to read that the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission postponed action on the long-overdue MonFayette Expressway connection to Pittsburgh (“Vote on Mon-Fay Expressway Tabled,” March 21). When one visits other cities, one drives on modern, limited-access highways. In Allegheny County, politicians without vision give us Route 51, Lebanon Church Road and other clogged arteries built in the heyday of the Model T.

One commissioner made the familiar argument that modern highways just allow motorists to bypass an area. Sometimes they do, and other times they facilitate a trip into the heart of the area in question. One thing is for sure: Drivers avoid old, slow routes clogged with traffic and lights.

Our region has fallen behind. We need transportation leaders with foresight. BRAD TUPI Upper St. Clair competition. This is not the way a true democracy should operate.

I am saddened to learn that no Western Pennsylvania legislator is a co-sponsor of SB 22. Some raise concerns regarding selection of members for a nonpartisan commission. Models are available in California and Arizona. Please contact your state senator and representative and ask her or him to sign onto this bill. Time is of the essence. MARTHA RAAK

Regarding President Donald Trump’s allegation that former President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower: U.S. Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said, “A lot of the things he says, you guys take literally.”

We took it literally, because Mr. Trump meant it literally. He never said, “Ha, ha, I was just joking.” No, Mr. Trump made a terrible accusation against Mr. Obama and against the American system of government, without even the slightest shred of evidence that it was true, and he meant it, literally. He expected Congress and the American people to believe his outright lie simply because he said it, and he expected, demanded, that we act on it.

This is the real Trump. This is what you get, a man who believes psychotic fantasies and wants us to act on and carry out these fantasies.

The Saturday tweet storm in which he made this allegation was not the first time for such behavior. Remember the birth certificate? He was just as disconnected

from reality and just as serious about it then. He expected us to believe his birther fantasy, with no evidence, just because he said so.

Until Donald Trump is removed from office, he will bombard us with one insane fantasy after another. What happens when one of his insane fantasies involves nuclear weapons? MARK HOLM

Regarding “Conflict Kitchen Closing Schenley Plaza Eatery, But Continuing Mission” (March 17): I can’t believe Conflict Kitchen is closing at just the time when its menu could become a global smorgasbord! JEFF STERLING
