Grocery store planned next to business park

A grocery store is planned for the property in front of Bursca Business Park in South Fayette.

During a public hearing at the March 15 meeting of the township commissioners, James Scalo, president of Burns & Scalo Real Estate Services Inc., announced that a local grocery is planned for the 6.6 acres on the east side of Washington Pike and the south side of Bursca Drive.

“A hotel was also interested in the property,” he said. “I think a grocery store is a better use.”

The parcel is near Freedom Drive South. It is currently zoned business, and Mr. Scalo wants the board to consider changing it to commercial.

Residents of Freedom Drive protested the change, citing concerns about traffic, late-night noise and obtrusive lighting.

“This property will be developed, it’s going to happen, but I want to work with you,” Mr. Scalo told the residents. He said he plans to change the property elevation and create buffers so that sound and lights are less intrusive.

Mr. Scalo asked the board to table the vote scheduled for that evening until he could further speak with residents concerning the pending development. He did not identify the grocer.

The board unanimously voted to table the subject until April, and the public hearing will be continued into April.

The board also approved the final land development plan for the new public works building in Treveskyn Park on Morgan Hill Road.

“By demolishing the old public works building, it also paves the way for the new community center,” township manager Ryan Eggleston said.

The township purchased three parcels of property from Joseph Berry in 2015. One parcel will be used for a pond and access road. The other will be used as a buffer. The middle parcel, with a home on it, will be sold.

The township hopes to begin construction of the new public works building this summer.

Commissioners also unanimously voted to approve a grant request from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to build an indoor walking track for the future community center.
