Vanka celebration

The fourth annual “Cocktails and Conservation” will be held from 6-9:30 p.m. April 28 at St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Millvale. The event is organized by the Society to Preserve the Millvale Murals of Maxo Vanka and supports the conservation and lighting of the 25 murals created by the Croatian artist in 1937 and 1941.

The society is an independent nonprofit that works with the St. Nicholas parish to preserve the regional heritage embodied by the murals. The events address restoration or mural history. The 2017 topic will be “Why Vanka?” and the evening’s host will be WQED’s Rick Sebak. “Cocktails” is usually held in early March but was moved to avoid unpredictable winter weather.

Tickets begin at $100 and may be purchased at www.vankamurals.org. Space is limited.

The evening begins with a cocktail reception featuring catering by Iron Oven, cocktails by the Ladies United for the Protection of Endangered Cocktails and beer tasting with Vecenie Distributing. Millvale-based Tupelo Honey Teas is creating special tea blends for the occasion. There will also be a silent auction with vintage flair for which Millville artist Mark Panza has created a light box with images of Vanka’s four evangelists. Jazz pianist Tom Roberts will provide entertainment. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m., followed by a dessert re-ception created by the St. Nicholas Bakers.
