Police officer honored

- By Deana Carpenter

Bethel Park police Officer David DiToppa was recognized Monday by his department and by the municipality for catching a suspected bank robber on Jan. 25.

Bethel Park police Chief Timothy O’Connor said Officer DiToppa “single-handedly” caught the suspect. The man is believed to be the same person who robbed Brentwood Bank in the South Park Shops the week before he was detained by Officer DiToppa.

Chief O’Connor presented the officer with a citation and a distinguished service medal to wear on his uniform.

Mayor Jack Allen presented him with a certificate of recognition from the municipality.

Also at Monday’s meeting, council approved a $264,506 contract with Traffic Systems and Services of Crafton for a traffic signal improvement project at the intersection of Brightwood and South Park roads.

Council also approved placing amendments to Bethel Park’s home rule charter on a referendum for a vote in the November general election. The revisions include dates for submitting the municipal capital budget and preliminary municipal budget and the terms under which the comprehensive plan shall be reviewed and updated.

The home rule charter was last revised in 2013 when a dedicated fire department tax was added.

Mr. Allen announced that Bethel Park’s annual spring cleanup day will be held April 22. The municipality will supply trash bags, safety vests and gloves. To volunteer, call 412-831-6800, ext 211.
