Top earners

With overtime factored in, the top earners in the state last year came mostly from the Department of Human Services and the Pennsylvania State Police.

However, corrections officers in the state’s prisons as well as physicians and psychiatrists in other departments earn the most, largely because they work so many overtime hours.

Without overtime, many of the people who manage the Public School Employee Retirement System top the list. Mr. Wolf also appears on this list, ranking 20th.

Salaries by department

Looking at average salaries across each state agency, the departments with the highest average salaries are home to lawyers, budget analysts and police officers.

Those who work on the Environmental Hearing Board — judges and lawyers making environmental oversight decisions — make, on average, about $82,700 per year.

The next highest average salaries come from PennVest, the infrastructure authority, and the Pennsylvania State Police department.

Their average salaries come in at about $71,000 and $70,400, respectively.

Breaking employees’ salaries into brackets is a handy way to see, roughly, what most people make.

A majority of state employees earn between $20,000 and $60,000. As expected, factoring in overtime causes some employees to jump into higher pay brackets.

Across all paid state employees, last year’s median salary was $42,753.
