Squirrel Hill at a glance
Website: www.shuc.org With pockets of tree-lined streets, a very busy business district and two major city parks. Squirrel Hill has long been one of the most soughtafter city neighborhoods.
Geographically split into two sections, Squirrel Hill North and Squirrel Hill South, the neighborhood has a total of 3.8 square miles.
The neighborhood possesses a rich diversity of ethnic and religious houses of worship, including more than 20 synagogues and Sixth Presbyterian Church at the corner of Forbes and Murray avenues. It was the home church to the late Fred Rogers of “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood,” the children’s PBS show. Other landmarks on the famous corner include a recently renovated Carnegie Library branch and the Squirrel Hill Café.
Visitors come from all over to stroll the business district, taking in a movie at the Manor Theater and visit a wide range of family restaurants whose cuisine includes Thai, Middle Eastern and Chinese. Of course, there is always the choice to grab a slice from one of the three pizza houses on lower Murray, Napoli’s, Aiello’s or Mineo’s.
