Cardinals coping with injuries

-

Although they left the ballpark encouraged by how outfielder Stephen Piscotty felt late Thursday night, the Cardinals placed the secondyear starter on the disabled list Friday, and they still have another decision to make on the health of center fielder Dexter Fowler.

After an exam with the team’s medical staff, Piscotty went on the 10-day disabled list with a strain of his right hamstring. Piscotty injured his leg while running out a groundball during Thursday’s 5-4 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.

He told reporters after the game that initial evaluations were encouraging and that after a follow-up Friday he could join the team in Atlanta. The shortened DL stay and the extent of the injury, which has not been clarified, blended into the decision.

Fowler followed Piscotty to the trainers’ room Thursday with a shoulder injury that the team felt could be the more severe of the two. The team has not confirmed Fowler’s diagnosis.

Mets

Catcher Travis d’Arnaud has been placed on the 10day disabled list with a bruised right wrist, the latest setback for a team beset by several key injuries. d’Arnaud is expected to wear a splint for seven days and then rest his wrist.

Orioles

Left-hander Wade Miley was struck by two consecutive line drives in the first inning and removed from Baltimore’s game against the White Sox. After Jose Abreu hit Miley on the left wrist with a comebacker, the pitcher was examined by a trainer and stayed in the game. Two pitches later, Avisail Garcia ripped a liner that struck Miley in the back of the left leg. He scrambled to his feet, but that was his final pitch.

Mariners

Left-hander James Paxton was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left forearm strain, another blow for Seattle’s already shorthanded starting rotation. The Mariners believe the injury is minor and Paxton will miss two or three starts.

Dodgers

Los Angeles first baseman Adrian Gonzalez has gone on the disabled list for the first time in his 14-year big league career, with right elbow soreness. Gonzalez had played 1,774 games without a DL trip, the most among active players.
