Drivers, bikers, walkers: Can’t we all just get along?

-

This is a plea to cease publishing letters to the editor pointing out singular acts of idiocy in regard to drivers, bikers and walkers (such as “Unsafe Cycling,” May 15).

I am a practitioner in all three modes of travel and am an aware observer, and I can assure you that there are offenders driving through a just-turned red light, biking through a stop sign or crossing in the middle of the street every hour of every day.

The publishing of these individual accounts by enraged or upset readers serves no purpose other than to affirm the stance of readers in agreement with the writer and to upset the other side because of the unbalanced nature of the letter’s report.

I cycle through town and am unnerved by drivers looking at their phones or speeding through lights. When I am on foot and waiting for a signal, it’s not like I don’t see those who are crossing against the light. And when driving, I wonder whether the cyclist I see blowing through a red light knows that he or she is putting safety on the line while also feeding into an unfair stereotype.

Unfortunately, stupidity knows no bounds, and these acts will continue to happen. The best you can do is be aware of your surroundings, report any dangerous behavior and abide by the simple rules of law so that we can all get to wherever it is we need to go, safely. BENJAMIN SOLTESZ
