No. 1 seed South Side Beaver holds on

South Side Beaver’s McKenna Smith had a no-hitter, a four-run lead and two outs in the final inning Tuesday. Then, the cut came, and Burgettsto­wn almost pulled off the upset.

Smith left the game with a cut on her finger and Burgettsto­wn scored three runs before South Side Beaver stopped the bleeding and held on for a 4-3 victory in a WPIAL Class 2A first-round playoff game at West Allegheny.

Smith finished with 15 strikeouts for South Side Beaver (15-2), the No. 1 seed for the playoffs, and also had a big day at the plate before exiting. She had two hits and two RBIs and her run-scoring single in the sixth provided the winning run.

Hunter Hand also had two hits, including a triple, for South Side Beaver.

Elsewhere in 2A

Seton-LaSalle 4, Bentworth 2: Pitt recruit Lexi Wagner had a two-run homer and three RBIs to lift the Rebels (11-4) to the first-round win against Bentworth (10-11) at Baldwin. Wagner had a sacrifice fly in the first inning and the homer in the third.

Laurel 7, O.L.S.H. 4: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (11-5) held a two-run lead before MacKenzie Latess hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning. The hit catapulted Laurel (11-4) to the win at West Allegheny.

Serra 9, Apollo-Ridge 6:

Nina Grandy, Lauren Kolenik and Theresa Terlecki all had two hits as Serra (106) pushed past Apollo-Ridge (10-4) at Hempfield. Serra held a 7-6 lead before scoring twice in the seventh.

Chartiers-Houston 8, Brentwood 2: A four-run sixth inning helped the Bucs (15-3) break open a close game in its victory against Brentwood (6-8) at Baldwin.

Class 5A

Albert Gallatin 5, Chartiers Valley 3: The Colonials (17-3) made their first playoff game in 21 years a successful one, squeezing by the Colts (9-8) at Baldwin. Maddy Hershberge­r pitched four no-hit innings to start the game for Albert Gallatin before Maddie Flowers came on to finish it.

Franklin Regional 10, Ringgold 1: Two players hit home runs as the Panthers (14-5) rolled to the win against Ringgold (10-9) at Latrobe. Mallory Hallock hit a two-run homer and Kate Alexander a three-run shot.

Montour 10, Kiski Area 3: Sarah Witcop had four RBIs as Montour (13-7) breezed to the victory against the Cavaliers (11-5) at North Allegheny.
