The vinyl spins on
The owner of Jerry’s Records has built an institution
Jerry Weber is flipping the record. Mr. Weber, the owner of Jerry’s Records in Squirrel Hill, has sold his record store. His last day will be July 31.
It’s easy to while away an afternoon browsing the floor-to-ceiling shelves in Jerry’s. Like a well-curated bookstore, the Murray Avenue shop offers something for everybody, from rock ’n’ roll to soul to opera.
Mr. Weber can’t say no to good vinyl. Perhaps that habit accounts for why Jerry’s made a Rolling Stone list of the country’s best record stores — and also why Mr. Weber appeared on the A&E show “Hoarders.”
The business will soon be in the hands of Chris Grauzer, one of Mr. Weber’s employees. The 78 rpm record shop Whistlin’ Willie’s, housed within Jerry’s, will move to a warehouse, and Mr. Weber will sell parts of his personal record collection at shows and online.
“Does a 69-year-old man need 20,000 records in his own collection?” he said. “I walk past my wall and there’s like 2½ feet of Billie Holiday records. I only need about a foot of Billie Holiday records!”
Mr. Grauzer, 33, said he doesn’t expect to make too many changes, although he plans to add other media, such as cassettes and VHS tapes, and he may slim down the Easy Listening section.
“I like this store because you can find everything,” Mr. Grauzer said, “and I think people appreciate that.”
Jerry’s is one of the places that makes Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh. Mr. Grauzer recognizes that too, and he seems prepared to keep the vinyl spinning at this Pittsburgh institution for years to come.
