Learn about the NRA before forming opinions

-

As it would appear, letter writer Hazel Cope’s opinion (“Don’t Arm Teachers,” May 24) is based on a lack of knowledge of the National Rifle Association. The objective of the NRA is to protect the Second Amendment; to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America; to encourage safe firearms handling from use to storage; to educate children with the Eddie Eagle Program, including just what to do if they would come across an unattended firearm. The NRA is a leader in promoting that existing laws pertaining to firearms used in crimes are upheld.

I am opposed to arming untrained teachers. However, I think an armed presence in schools would certainly deter the cowardly evil animals who prey on soft targets, knowing they can cause devastation to unprotected children and staff.

During World War II, the NRA led the effort to provide the unarmed citizens of England with private arms from the United States to defend themselves from the Nazi invasion. While Ms. Cope might not agree with the NRA’s objective, her opinion seems based on misinformation rather than facts. Also please note Ms. Cope’s right to publicly state her opinion. This involves another amendment the NRA helps to protect — for without the Second Amendment, there would be no First Amendment. DICK FORNEAR JR.

His columns are his opinions, and he did not “assure readers” that the Penguins had no chance without Kris Letang. He merely stated his opinion! It was not a flat-out prediction. To say that Mr. Cook has “very little knowledge” of the field he covers is ridiculous. His allaround knowledge of our local sports teams is unsurpassed.

I have never met Mr. Cook and do not know him, but I highly respect his writing and his opinions. I’m guessing Mr. Cook was rooting for the Penguins, even though he had his doubts about their ability to win the series without Mr. Letang. So no need for him to “eat crow” as suggested by Mr. Pile. My husband and I would like to recognize a very special group in the Beaver County region. I am referring to Tiger Pause, a nonprofit organization that ministers to young people in so many ways. There is a helpful after-school program (free of charge), in which positive mentoring takes place, including homework help and snacks. Various fun events, also free of charge for the young people, are planned throughout the year. Gifts from the community and churches sponsor this loving ministry.

Also, this household, in addition to many I know, have taken advantage of the workforce of the men in this organization

in several ways, including much outdoor work, painting and many more indoor and outdoor projects. The biggest help to us in these past three years has been two major household moves, which were done carefully, efficiently and without any damage to our items and at a significantly lower cost than any other moving service in the area.

Hats off to all the staff who work with our young people. It is well deserved. CARLA McKRELL
