Indians enjoy 2nd chance

West Allegheny routs Moon, wins 1st crown

During the season, West Allegheny softball coach Mindi McFate tried not to talk with her team about the way its WPIAL season ended last year. McFate didn’t want this season to be played in the shadows of that 10-0 loss to Mount Pleasant in the run-rule shortened Class 3A softball championsh­ip.

The Indians did not squander it. Using its high-powered offense, West Allegheny flipped the script and run-ruled Moon, 12-2, in six innings at California University’s Lilley Field. It is the first softball championsh­ip in school history.

“It is actually kind of ironic. We’ve yet to a play an entire WPIAL championsh­ip game,” said McFate. “Apparently seven innings in the championsh­ip game doesn’t work for us.”

Pitcher Ashley Seamon did everything for the Indians. The junior limited the Tigers to just two runs on eight hits. She also went 2 for 3 with four RBIs, including two in the sixth inning which would eventually clinch the run-rule victory.

West Allegheny almost didn’t get its second chance. Trailing by four runs in the bottom of the seventh in the WPIAL semifinal, the Indians scored five runs to roar
