H&M to close SouthSide Works location

Clothing retailer H&M will close its SouthSide Works store June 15, the latest blow to the South Side retail, office, entertainm­ent and residentia­l complex. The Swedenbase­d company confirmed the closing in a statement released Thursday. It stated that employees will be offered the option of relocating to comparable positions in stores in the surroundin­g area. H&M is the latest retailer to close at SouthSide Works. The complex earlier lost American Eagle Outfitters, which has its headquarte­rs on the grounds, and BCBG Max Azria.

GNC’s chief marketing officer steps down

Jeff Hennion has resigned as chief marketing and e-commerce officer for GNC Holdings, Inc., the company reported late Thursday in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The filing said Mr. Hennion has agreed to serve as a consultant for up to one year for the Pittsburgh-based health and wellness retailer. No reason was cited for the resignatio­n or his future plans. Mr. Hennion had returned to GNC in September 2014, taking a position similar to one he held there in 2011-12. He previously was president and chief financial officer at Branding Brand on the South Side.

UPMC cancer centers honor Hillmans

More than 50 UPMC cancer center locations globally will be renamed UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, officials said this week, in honor of Henry and Elsie Hillman, whose foundation­s provided $10 million to establish the Hillman Cancer Center in Shadyside in 2002.

U.S. Steel appoints interim CFO

U.S. Steel named Pipasu Soni interim CFO to fill a role vacated when David B. Burritt was named president and CEO last month. Mr. Soni has been vice president of finance since February and joined the Pittsburgh steel producer last year. He will hold the post until a permanent CFO is named.

Cybersecur­ity expert joins Pitt

The University of Pittsburgh announced Thursday, that Kiersten Todt — former executive director of the Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecur­ity — will immediatel­y begin serving as resident scholar on its Institute for Cyber Law, Policy and Security. In the past, Ms. Todt headed the national cybersecur­ity commission that guided President Barack Obama’s February 2016 Cybersecur­ity National Action Plan.

Salaries for associate lawyers mostly unchanged

The overall median firstyear salary for law associates in firms with more than 250 lawyers as of Jan. 1, 2017, was $135,000, the same as in 2015, the year of the most recent survey, according to a report by the Washington, D.C.-based National Associatio­n for Law Placement. The median for firms with 501 to 700 lawyers was $160,000 as of Jan. 1 this year.

UPMC names medical informatio­n officer

Physician Robert Bart will oversee UPMC’s efforts to advance the use of electronic health records and other technologi­es as the new chief medical informatio­n officer for the health services division. Dr. Bart previously was chief medical informatio­n officer for the Department of Health Services in Los Angeles County.

Downtown McDonald’s cleared to reopen

A McDonald’s restaurant at 500 Liberty Ave., Downtown, was cleared to reopen Thursday afternoon after being ordered closed the day before by the Allegheny County Health Department because of a sewage backup in the basement affecting the walk-in freezer room and dry stock room. Inspection reports for food facilities in the county are available online at www.achd.net.
