The second phase of the reconstruction of Potomac Avenue in Dormont will begin around June 20 and is expected to be completed by late September, according to borough engineer Wayne McVicar.

Sections of the road will close during the work, but traffic patterns will not change after the reconstruction is complete.

Dormont has contracted Penn Hills-based Niando Construction Inc. for the second phase of the project, keeping work on one of the borough’s main roads on schedule.

Phase I of the project saw the reconstruction of Potomac from West Liberty Avenue to Espy Avenue, Mr. McVicar said.

For Phase II, on the section of Potomac between Espy and Voelkel Avenue, “we're going to pick up from where Phase I left off,” Mr. McVicar said.

That means replacing asphalt on the road and replacing sidewalks and crosswalks with permeable pavers, a brick-like material.

New tree planters will be installed, and lantern-style street lamps will replace existing lamps north of the Tline crossing.

The current construction, the first in over 30 years, will improve the appearance of the street and, with permeable pavers, facilitate drainage, Mr. McVicar said.

Niando will start work after Columbia Gas finishes upgrading its mains on the street.
