Families dealing with depression: You’re not alone

A surge of attention has focused on mental health challenges that young people face such as depression, anxiety, isolation and suicidal thoughts. The popular Broadway show “Dear Evan Hansen” (winner of this year’s Tony for Best Musical), TV series such as “13 Reasons Why” and numerous articles including “In Distress: Large Study Finds Teens May First Experience Depression Between Ages of 12 and 17” (June 6) are all raising awareness that teens’ struggles are common and very real.

LEAD Pittsburgh is dedicated to being a voice for those wrestling with these monumental challenges. We have collaborated with behavioral health care professionals and would like to share some of what we’ve learned with teenagers and their families:

• You are not alone! One in five youths in the U.S. will experience a mental health challenge during their adolescent years or at some point in their lives (Merikangas et al., 2010).

• Many adults and professionals care and want to help. One place to start can be with your parents and your primary care physician.

• Stigma may be holding you back from talking to someone you trust about how you are feeling. If you reach out for help, you can start down the path to feeling better.

• As the “In Distress” article in the Post-Gazette states, it is vital that you recognize common symptoms of teenage depression such as long periods of low moods, inability to enjoy previously enjoyed activities and withdrawing from friends and family, among other things.

• Don’t delay in seeking help if you are concerned about yourself or someone you know.

LEAD Pittsburgh has learned about the benefits of building — the ability to bounce back from setbacks. Stress management techniques, self-care skills, strong support networks and goal setting can provide you with a tool kit enabling you to adapt in the face of life’s adversities.

You are not alone and help is available. The sooner you reach out, the sooner you experience relief.

Today is a good day to ask for help! SHEILA FINE Chair, LEAD Pittsburgh Downtown
