- By Molly Born

Penn State University President Eric Barron received a $224,000 bonus last fiscal year, bringing his total earnings to more than $1 million and placing him among the top ten highest-paid public college presidents in the country.

Mr. Barron’s total compensation was reported at $1,039,717, by the Chronicle of Higher Education, which on Wednesday released its latest annual look at the earnings of hundreds of public college and university leaders across the country. That includes $800,000 in base pay, plus the bonus, landing him in sixth place.

Included in The Chronicle survey were 254 leaders from 221 public colleges. Some either began or finished their tenures during fiscal year 2013-14, which typically runs from July 1 through June 30 at most institutions.

Private college surveys, based on reviews of IRS tax form 990s and U.S. Department of Education filings, are due out in December.

Mr. Barron had the fifth-largest bonus package and the seventh-largest base pay in the 2015-16 fiscal year. University
