A welcoming Pittsburgh needs leadership diversity
I was struck by the contrast in articles in the Health & Wellness and Business sections of the PG on July 11. The former headlined that “Jay-Z and Kanye Agree: Pittsburgh Not Worth a Tour Date.” The latter pictured four white VisitPittsburgh staffers placed in charge of shaping the county marketing vision for the next decade (“Leading the Way”).
Although hip-hop may be thriving in Pittsburgh and JayZ and Kanye’s bookers misguided, the irony in the lack of diversity among the tourism agency’s 2022 Committee leadership is not lost. I am appointed to the Pennsylvania Advisory Committee to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission. Although the absence of meaningful federal funding has disabled the advisory committee from raising consciousness to a level that would make such oversights less likely, the least one can do is raise awareness of missed opportunity.
If we hope to build on the welcoming message that Pittsburgh is sending to the world of late, we must include in our leadership ranks all of the people we hope to attract to our region. STEVE IRWIN Squirrel Hill to present all sides of any issue?
With cable and network news political reporting being totally one-sided and biased, it is now becoming irrelevant.
I can see why we now have the term “fake news.” JERRY McGINNIS

I cannot be sympathetic for any Pennsylvanians who did not vote or voted for Donald Trump and Pat Toomey in the 2016 election should they, their children or parents lose the medical coverage provided by the Affordable Care Act. It is clear that Trumpcare reflects the Trump/Toomey lack of concern for children, the disadvantaged, disabled and aged. During the campaign Mr. Trump said, “Vote for me. What have you got to lose?” The answer lies in Mr. Trump’s health care and his budget.
Congressional testimony of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney was a mirror into Donald Trump the man. Trumpcare and Mr. Trump’s budget are brutal, callous, ignorant and reckless, promoting the loss of health care for 22 million of the most vulnerable and canceling Meals on Wheels for the aged and school lunches for needy children. Mr. Mulvaney claimed these programs provide no benefit and are a waste of money.
Trumpcare and his budget increase inequality and poverty, place more children at risk from illness and hunger, and abandon the elderly and working poor. Republicans are as responsible for these catastrophes.
We welcome your opinion
They have been the Republicans’ position for the past eight years. Mr. Trump is totally insensitive to the needs of the most vulnerable and has adopted the perverted priorities of the Republican majority of giving massive tax cuts to the wealthy and devastating the most vulnerable.
In less than six months, the United States has lost its reputation as the leader of the free world. Here lies the peril of having a rich bully who is a geopolitical buffoon and is professionally unprepared, intellectually ill informed, morally compromised and temperamentally unfit to be president.
