• One has to hand it to “MasterChef” (Wednesdays, 8 p.m.). Some reality shows change up the rules to annoying effect, but this week’s episode (beyond Gordon Ramsay getting into an expletive-filled, testosterone fest with one of the contestants) was a doozy.

Yachecia Holston, a minister from Detroit, captained the losing team on a swanky breakfast team challenge (although the menu at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills was more lemon ricotta pancakes and eggs Benedict than truffle quiche).

She was given a choice: take immunity for herself, or allow five of the six other members of her team to gain immunity. She would then face a fish-and-chips skills cook-off against the member not sent to the balcony.

Ms. Holston stepped up the plate, giving Caitlin Jones, a dancer from Peters, and four others the immunity. She then faced down Jennifer Williams, a debt collector from Louisiana prone to panickingunder pressure.

They both acquitted themselves well, but in the end the preacher won.
