CASTLE SHANNON
Over the past few weeks four signs that say “Welcome to Castle Shannon Borough” have been stolen from main roads in the town. The signs were at Greenridge Road and Connor Road; Hamilton Road; McRoberts Road and Loma Drive; and Route 88 and Spring Street.
Police said the thieves removed the signs by unfastening hardware, apparently to avoid damaging the signs.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 412-885-9300 or the borough office, 412-8859200.
A reward is being offered.
McKEES ROCKS
Three sets of public steps off Bouquet Street are in line for reconstruction.
Mayor Jack Muhr recently told council the borough received a $100,000 grant from the state Department of Community and Economic Development to rebuild the steps. He credited state Rep. Dan Deasy, D-Westwood, for his help in obtaining the grant.
Borough manager Ruth Pompey said the borough building has a new security system that features cameras and a buzzer system that will require visitors to identify themselves before entering.
IRWIN
Council has promoted assistant borough manager Valerie Morton to manager.
She will assume the position on Sept. 2, when current manager Mary Benko retires. Mrs. Benko will stay on part-time for a while to help with sewage and garbage billing, Ms. Morton said.
Ms. Morton, 36, of Irwin, graduated from Norwin High School and from Robert Morris University with a degree in information technology.
She will earn $47,500 as manager.
