GalleriE CHIZ, a staple of Shadyside for more than 20 years, will no longer be a full-time gallery come October. Ellen Chisdes Neuberg, the gallery’s owner and director, sent a letter to clients, members, friends and others on Wednesday.

Ms. Neuberg said the reason was a decline in business.

“I’m feeling that galleries as we’ve known them and how we know them now are becoming obsolete,” she said Wednesday. “I don’t think this is a trend that will last forever, but I don’t have the money to wait until it ends.”

The gallery’s last exhibition will close at the end of September, “Inside US, Outside U.S.,” featuring four artists who have emigrated from or immigrated to the United States. “August,” celebratingthe work of 24 local artists over age70, closes at the end of August.

Beginning in October, Ms. Neuberg will use the gallery as studio space and exhibit artists’ work, possibly with diminished hours, until she sells the building. She typically paints there in January and February. “I realized I haven’t painted since I was in the gallery in February.”

She said she’s grateful to the people who have frequented and supported the gallery.

“When people say nice things, supportive things, I cry. But when they aren’t saying those things I feel relieved, like I’ve made the right decision.”
