By crafting a bowie knife, then adding a D guard and an elk horn handle, Mr. Takach worked his way into the final round of History’s “Forged in Fire” this week.
He adroitly fashioned a bowie knife, then added a D guard after advancing to the second round against three other bladesmiths. Part of the tests included judges hammering the blade against a nail, and there were cut tests for sharpness as well.
The last challenge — producing an ancient sword called a Shamshir — required Mr. Takach and the other finalist to work on them in their home forges. The five-day effort was hardly smooth. Mr. Takach was shown with his clothes catching fire, but he said that happens a lot.
He had never made a sword before.
“I thought, ‘Wow, this is really cool.’ And I liked how it performed.”
The judges agreed, giving him the victory when shooting resumed.
• On “Face Off: Divide and Conquer,” time ran out on Suzanne Bostwick, a graduate of Tom Savini’s Special Makeup Effects Program in Monessen, whose demonic clockthemed makeup fell short. Another Savini grad, Philip Harrah, is still in the season 12 race.
